Hanu-Man, also known as HanuMan, is a 2024 Indian superhero film directed, written, produced by Teja Sajjo in the titular role. It is the first instalment of Prasanth’s “Cinematic Universe” and is set in a fictional village called Anjanadri. The film was first announced in May 2021, and principal photography on the film began on June 25, 2021, in Hyderabad. The film was completed by mid-April, 2023.

The film was released on January 12, 2024, on the Sankranti, and received positive reviews from critics, who praised Prashanth’s direction, script, cast, visuals, production design, action sequences, Lord Hanuman’s visualization, background score, and VFX. The film grossed more than ₹250 crores worldwide within 15 days of release, and a sequel is in the making.

This origin story is a fun-filled masala experience, and Prashanth manages to blend in mythology, rooted in the roots of the new age superheroes, through his clever, self-aware, organic writing. The story is deliberately kept simple, and falls back on the usual good vs evil conflicts, but the neat structure of the world-character-relationships, along with the consistent dose of humor and drama, keeps the show going.

His audio visuals and presentation are fascinating, and he uses the chant-galore soundtrack and the cinematography to elevate the highs to pure whistle-worthy goosebumps. The entire cast delivers great performances. The monkey and pop-culture references were fun to watch, and the extended climax packs some serious punch, and you can’t help but look forward to the next installment.

It has its flaws, and you can nitpick at the generic hiccups, but you have to give it the benefit of the doubt that it lives up to its ambitious vision with honesty and conviction. Simple, satisfying, and satisfying on the big screen.
